The Young Leader Training Scheme is an exciting programme from The Scouts designed to help Explorer Scouts build real leadership skills while volunteering with a younger section. It gives young people aged 14–18 the opportunity to step up, take responsibility and gain practical experience supporting Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs or Scouts — all while developing skills that will last a lifetime.
Through a series of structured training modules and hands-on missions, Young Leaders learn how to plan activities, manage behaviour positively, communicate effectively and keep young people safe. It’s not just about helping at weekly meetings — it’s about growing in confidence, learning how to lead a team and understanding what makes great Scouting happen.
The scheme is nationally recognised within Scouts and supports future leadership roles, volunteering and even employment, with transferable skills that colleges, universities and employers value highly. Many of our adult volunteers started their journey as Young Leaders — and it’s often where a lifelong passion for Scouting begins.
If you’re ready to challenge yourself, develop new skills and make a real difference to younger members, the Young Leader Training Scheme is the perfect next step.

The Four Missions
Alongside the modules, Young Leaders complete four practical “missions” within their section:
- Mission 1: Get to know the section and support programme delivery
- Mission 2: Plan and run part of a meeting
- Mission 3: Lead a full activity
- Mission 4: Take responsibility for a longer-term project
These missions allow Young Leaders to put their training into action and demonstrate real leadership.
