As young people develop in confidence, skills and independence, they’ll be ready to take the next step in their Scouting journey. Moving up to the next section is an exciting milestone — it marks progress, celebrates achievement and opens the door to new challenges.
When Do Young People Move Up?
Each section in Scouts is designed around an age range:
• Squirrels (4–6)
• Beavers (6–8)
• Cubs (8–10½)
• Scouts (10½–14)
• Explorers (14–18)
• Network (18–25)
When a young person reaches the upper age of their section, they’ll normally move up to the next one. We work closely with section leaders to make sure the timing feels right for each individual.
How the Moving Up Process Works
Moving up isn’t just about age — it’s about readiness and celebration.
Before moving on, young people will:
• Be introduced to their new section
• Visit for one or more taster sessions
• Meet their new leaders and make new friends
• Celebrate their time in their current section
Many groups hold a special “Moving Up” ceremony to recognise everything they’ve achieved and mark the beginning of their next adventure.
What Parents Need to Know
We aim to make the transition smooth and positive for both young people and parents. You’ll be contacted in advance by leaders from both sections with:
• Details of start dates
• Meeting times and locations
• Information about uniform changes
• Any updated subscriptions or forms
If you have questions at any stage, our leaders are always happy to help.
The Adventure Continues
Each move brings new skills, bigger challenges and more independence — from learning teamwork in Squirrels to leading expeditions as Scouts and Explorers.
Scouting is designed as a journey, and every step builds confidence, resilience and friendships that last a lifetime.
We can’t wait to see where their adventure takes them next.
