SUMMARY:Chess Competition 2026
DESCRIPTION:These championships are open to any member of City of York Scouts who are already able to play chess.  This gives young people an opportunity to have fun applying and developing their skills in games with others of a similar age.\n\nThere are planned to be 3 categories of competition aligned to age groups:\n\nJunior\nIntermediate\nSenior\n\nSpecific age groups\, plus start and finish times will be assigned to each category when we know participant numbers and their ages.\nWe will notify participants once the timings are decided.  We expect each competition category to take circa 2 hours\, with participants having a number of games.\nTo enter the championships every entrant must be familiar with the rules of chess.\nPlaying instruction will not be given but a ruling over disputed moves will.\nThe maximum amount of time to complete a game will be determined by the number of entrants in each category.\nThe outcome of each game will be determined using a predefined scoring system\, with the maximum score being achieved by Checkmate.\nSection Leaders do not need to accompany young people.  Parents are however encouraged to stay during the event and will have seats to relax while waiting for their young person (perhaps bring a book to read!).\nWe hope to provide tea and coffee for spectators\, but young people may want to bring their own snacks and a water bottle.\nIf parents are unable to stay they may consent to onsite Scout volunteers looking after their young person providing emergency contact details and support information is provided.
